We watched this documentary in class. Questions for this video are in the assignments page. Today we did an activity to help identify our personal beliefs and biases. The assignment is to write a journal based on how you felt during the activity. Which statements incited reactions? What emotions did you feel? What made you angry? Sad? Embarrassed? Happy? How might this way of thinking affect others and how we treat others?
Today we learned about equality and equity. These are terms you will need to know moving forward.
We read Privilege 101 and worked on questions. (found in assignments page) These are due tomorrow. Today we talked a little about the Orange shirt movement for remembering the children of the residential school system. We also tried to understand privilege and oppression a little bit more.
Journal #2 is due today. Today we did a privilege walk to see what areas each of us might be marginalized. After doing this activity, I asked students to consider the following questions for reflection:
1. What did you feel when doing this activity? when you had to step back? when you stepped forward? 2. What question during the walk made you think the most? 3. If you could add a question to the walk, what would it be? 4. What do you wish people knew about the identities, situations, or disadvantages that made you step backwards? 5. What does this teach you about marginalization? Today we had ME POEM presentations and talked about privilege and oppression.
Today we presented ME POEMS and talked about the flower of power (privilege and oppression).
Today we worked on a set of rules that we will use to guide our discussions.
ME POEMS are due and PRESENTATIONS will happen tomorrow. Today we talked about what it would take to make our class a safe space to share. We brainstormed ideas and began work on our "I am" poem.
